Penstemon palmeri
Native Perennial Forb, Seed Code: PEPA
Palmer Penstemon is the most widely used penstemon for reclamation and habitat improvement. In addition to it’s beautification value (it’s hot pink flowers are a real eye-catcher!), it is an excellent species to include in any mix where soil stabilization is the goal. It thrives in rocky soils, on exposed sidehills or open flats and is very productive in the first few years following a fire. If nothing else, it adds great diversity to it’s plant community.
Palmer’s penstemon is found from New Mexico through California to Idaho. It does best on well-drained soils. It performs well on infertile, disturbed soils and has excellent cold winter and drought tolerance. Palmer’s penstemon is found in blackbrush, sagebrush, Joshua tree, pinyon-juniper, and ponderosa pine communities.
Penstemons are not recommended for single species seeding. When used as a component of a mix, adjust to percent of mix desired. For mined lands and other harsh critical areas, doubling the seeding rate component of penstemon is not required.
Flowering should not be expected until at least the second growing season.
