Product Description

Bedrock Smooth Brome
Scientific Name: Bromus inermis

Bedrock Smooth Brome is a new improved variety developed over the last 5 years. It borrows parentage from the old standby “Manchar” with keen attention to selection for desirable traits. Bedrock Smooth Brome germplasm has been specifically bred for supreme palatability, reduced aggressiveness of rhizomatous growth, and high biomass production. Bedrock Brome is a great companion for other grasses and legumes.

Smooth Brome has an aggressive rhizominous root system and can be an invasive species in some areas. In the right conditions it will take over and result in a monoculture. Bedrock addresses the aggressiveness of the species and offers the following benefits:

  • Increased palatability
  • Finer stems
  • Mellowed rhizomatous development
  • Less aggressive than other varieties

Availability of Bedrock Smooth Brome is limited in 2020. It will only be available as a component in our pasture mixes. Production fields are in place and Bedrock should be available as a single item in 2021.

Smooth Brome is a long-lived introduced perennial. It has an extensive and aggressive root system. Widely used for pasture, forage, disturbed sites. It is the most widely used of the cultivated bromegrasses. It has been cultivated in the United States since the early 1880s. It is distributed throughout most of the states.
