Xeriscaping is a landscaping design that dramatically reduces or eliminates the need for irrigation. In place of lawns and turn, drought tolerant plants are strategically placed in your landscape. Mixtures of  shrubs, flowers, grasses and cactuses are common.

Xeriscape (from the Greek word Xeros, meaning “dry”) landscapes need little or no water beyond what the natural climate provides. Xeriscaping most frequently occurs in the arid, dry regions of the western United States where some cities support and even mandate xeriscaping in protective covenants. In come cities residents are offered reductions in their water bill to convert to xeriscaping. Xeriscaping can reduce water use by 50% saving residents water and money.

Vegetation appropriate for the climate it key, and it often means replacing grass lawns with soil, rocks, mulch, and drought-tolerant native plant species. Efficient irrigation methods like drip and soaker hoses place water directly at the base of plants and prevent evaporation. This also helps suppress weeds.
