The Intermountain West is poised to have a record fire year. The Canal, Knolls, and Rock Path Fire have burned in Utah. In Arizona the Mangum, Bighorn, and Bringham, and in Nevada the Meadow Valley and the Twin Fires. Hundreds more are currently burning throughout the Western states and will be for some time. Personal property and homes are damaged, crops are destroyed and ecosystems are reduced to ash. In the wake of fire devastation property owners are left to reclaim and rebuild.
If you or your land have been effected by wildfire in any way we want you to know that there are resources available to help you rebuild. We invite you to consider the numerous seed species adapted to your area that will:
- Stabilize soils and prevent erosion
- Establish ground cover
- Retain moisture
- Restore cover for wildlife
- Promote pollinators and beneficial bugs
- Regenerate feed and forage for livestock
In 2014 and 2015 the Carlton and Okanogan fires burned to become the largest wildfires in Washington state history. They burned a combined total of nearly 600,000 acres and hundreds of homes and ranches.
“After the fire the ground was covered in gray-black ash that puffed up with each step.”
Land owners in the Methow River Valley were hit particularly hard when high winds pushed the fire through dense stands of ponderosa pine. The intensity of the fire reduced a once lush and beautiful landscape to a moonscape of ash and dust. One customer described it by saying, “After the fire the ground was covered in gray-black ash that puffed up with each step.
After the fires Great Basin Seed played an active role in helping land owners establish seed mixes appropriate for the area. Five years later those seed mixes have established into beautiful and useful mountain parks, meadows and pastures capable of sustaining the local wildlife and livestock.
