Goosberryleaf Globemallow (Sphaeralicia grossularifolia)

We are frequently asked how to identify the different kinds of globeamallows. It can be a tricky thing, especially if you are looking at a plant or stand that has hybridized or has unique traits as a result of soils and ecosystem.

Goosberryleaf Globemallow (Sphaeralcia grossularifolia) has distinct leaves, as shown in the enclosed photos. They are deeply lobed with the leaf blades being longer than they are wide. The leaves are similar in appearance to Scarlet Globemallow (Sphaeralica coccinea), but Scarlet Globemallow plants are much smaller, generally no more than 12″ tall. Another distinguishing characteristic is that the stems generally have a red cast to them, the color more pronounced at the base of the stem.

A Utah Flora by S.L. Welsh describes Goosberryleaf Globemallow as  having leaves “whitish, to yellowish canescent to subglabrous and green; leaf blades 1.3—5 cm long, 1.3—5 cm wide, usually longer than wide, ovate to cordate-ovate in outline, the base cordate to truncate or obtuse, usually 3- to 5-lobed, the main division usually cleft or parted to irregularly toothed”.oosberryleaf Globemallow, Goosberryleaf Globemallow, Goosberryleaf Globemallow
