General Description:

Scarlet Flax (Linum grandiflorum) is an annual flowering plant native to North Africa. Scarlet Flax has vibrant scarlet-red, cup-shaped flowers with five petals each featuring a slightly darker center. Linum grandiflorum grows around 12-18 inches tall. This flower thrives in full sun but can tolerant some shade. It does best in well-drained sandy or loamy soils but is adaptable to various soil types. Scarlet Flax is drought tolerant once it is established.

Uses:

Scarlet Flax is commonly used for ornamental purposes because of its striking color. It’s also used for wildlife to attract bees and butterflies.

Planting Conditions:

Linum grandiflorum is a hardy, adaptable plant but to achieve abundant flowering and vibrant growth ensure the soil is a well drained soil preferable sandy or loamy soil. Good drainage is important to avoid root rot. If soil is clay amend the soil with sand or organic matter. Scarlet Flax does tolerant alkaline soils with a range of 6.5 to 8.5. Plant in an area where the plant will receive full sun but as stated above it can tolerate some shade. It needs at least 6-8 hours of direct sun.

Scarlet flax thrives in warm, dry climates but can tolerate cooler conditions during germination, but avoid any frost.

Establishment:

Scarlet Flax does not require any pre-treatment before planting. Loosen the top 2-3 inches of soil and level the surface, but ensure to firm the soil bed before planting the seeds. The seeds do best when planted no more than 1/8 inch deep. Press the seeds directly in the soil and press gently to give good seed to soil contact. Best time to plant Linum grandiflorum is in the spring after the last frost date. In mild climates, seeds can be sown in late fall for natural over wintering. Keep the soil consistently moist during germination but avoid water logging. Once established reduce watering, transitioning to a dry tolerant schedule.

Fertilization is unneeded unless the soil is exceptionally poor.

Once planted germination takes 10-14 days under ideal conditions. Blooming periods extend from late spring to midsummer. During Establishment keep the area weed free to avoid any competition. If these steps are followed scarlet flax will establish quickly.
