This chicory was a cross between a forage variety out of New Zealand and an Italian variety that was being marketed for human consumption called Pan de Sucre which was supposed to be less bitter than most of the chicory varieties in the marketplace. We thought that perhaps if we developed a variety that had a sweeter leaf that it would be more attractive to deer and livestock. We have named this variety ‘Chubby’ after its big fat leaves. This characteristic distinguishes it easily from existing forage varieties. The leaves are lightly pubescent which should also improve their forage appeal to livestock and deer alike!
