There are about 200 species of Indian Paintbrush (Castilleja ssp.). It occurs in a wide range of ecosystems including north and south America, Asia, Alaska and the Andes mountains. It can be found from sea level to 11,000 feet. Many varieties are indigenous to the Great Basin and Western USA.
Most Indian Paintbrush species are hand collected in native stands. Availability is scarce and good harvest locations are unpredictable. See Marsh Indian Paintbrush (Castilleja exilis).
