Plains Coreopsis

Fun Fact:

Plains coreopsis (Coreopsis tinctoria) was used by some tribes to make bright red and yellow dye. They also used different parts of the plant for tea and medicinal purposes.

General Description:

Plains Coreopsis (Coreopsis tinctoria) also known as garden tickseed, golden tickseed, or calliopsis. Coreopsis tinctoria is an annual forb. It is a great pollinator known for its vivid blooms and ability to thrive in challenging conditions. Plains Coreopsis grows upright generally around 1-3 feet tall. The leaves grow mostly at the lower half of the plant and are most similar to a fern. The flowers are daisy like with bright yellow petals with maroon to reddish-brown in the center. It is a highly attractive flower for bees and butterflies

Planting Conditions:

Coreopsis tinctoria does best in full sun, at least 6 hours a day to achieve the most blooms. Soil needs to be well drained. It won’t do well in heavy clay or waterlogged conditions. Plains coreopsis is drought tolerant once it is established. It needs regular water during germination through early growth. Be cautious to not overwater as it can cause root rot. It is both heat and cold tolerant.

Sow directly in the soil in early spring after the risk of frost. In warmer climates it can be planted in early fall. It will germinate best in tempertures between 60-70 degrees. Plant shallow so the seed dont get too deep. Press the seeds gently into the soil to achieve good seed to soil contact.

Establishment:

Coreopsis tinctoria is quick to establish, making it a great choice for mixes and restoration projects. Germination takes roughly about 5-15 days under good conditions. Light is needed. don’t burry the seeds.

Water consistently until they plant reaches 3-4 inches tall. to reduce competition thin plants out to about 6-12 inches apart if desired. Plains Coreopsis flowers between 6-8 weeks after germination and will continue to produce flowers through summer and into early fall.
