Forage Kale (Brassica oleracea sabellica) are great incorporated with other brassica plants like radishes, collard, turnips etc. Because most brassica plants are winter hardy, Kale is often used as a winter crop. When planted in the fall it can withstand a cold winter and begin growing in the spring as the weather warms.

Cover Crop:
Forage Kale has show to help in opening up the soil because of its tap roots. As a cover crop kale can be planted in late summer or early fall; using it as a winter crop helps protect the soil longer from erosion.

Establishment:
The spring green-up of Kale is similar to forage rapeseed. Seed size and crop management are similar to other brassica. Seed should be planted at 7-8 lbs/area when planted as a single species and 2-3 lbs/area when mixed with other crops. It is best to sow forage kale seed for cover crop between July and August for the Midwest, or between September and October for the South.

We currently stock the “Bayou” variety. Bayou is a mid-maturing forage brassica with good winter hardiness. It has a smaller stem but grows to a height of 8 feet when taken for seed production. Bayou has excellent regrowth when rotationally grazed, and the stems are more palatable than forage rapes for cattle and sheep. Used in food plots for deer as well as upland game birds, animals demonstrate a preference for Kale when planted side by side with other rapeseed.

When planted in late summer or early fall Kale is considerably more winter-hardy than radishes and helps control erosion. The spring green-up of Bayou kale is similar to forage rapes, while its seed size and crop management are similar to other brassicas, like turnips.
