General Description:

Longspur Lupine (Lupinus arbustus) is a perennial native wildflower. It excels in thriving in challenging environments. Longspur Lupine does best in well drained soils, it tolerates gravelly, and sandy soils. Once this lupinus arbustus is established it is drought tolerant but you will get better results is the spring time has moderate moisture. It does best in full sun but it can tolerant some shade. Similar to other lupines it offers some nitrogen fixation. It is an excellent choice for stabilizing the soil. Longspur Lupine is also known as Elegant Lupine, and Spurred Lupine.

Longspur Lupine does contain alkaloids that are toxic to livestock, especially cattle and sheep. Is not recommended to plant anywhere livestock may graze on.

Uses:

  • Landscaping
  • Pollinator
  • Nitrogen Fixation
  • Erosion Control

Planting Conditions:

Well draining soils are needed for best results. Avoid waterlogged soils . It does really well in poor soils due to its nitrogen fixing. pH ideally between 6.0-7.2. For maximum flowing production it will need full sun. It will need water to get started like any other plant. Try to keep the top of the soil damp during germination and establishment. Once it is established this is when the plant will become more drought tolerant. It grows at elevations of 3,500-9,000ft. It is very winter hardy, tolerates dry summers and windy environments.

The best time to plant lupinus arbustus is in the fall (late September – November) depending on location. By doing a late fall planting you will allow for natural stratification of the seed which helps with germination rate. Early spring time is also an option for planting. Plant as soon as the ground is workable once the seeds have been pre-treated.

It is recommended to scarify the seed by nicking the seed shell, or soaking I warm water for 12-24 hours.

Establishment:

Longspur Lupine can take 1-2 growing seasons to establish

Make sure to stay on top of weed control during establishment to avoid the least amount of competition.

Seeding Rate:

1-3 lbs per acre

**Don’t plant deeper than 1/4″ shallow planting is needed for best results.
