Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) is a warm-season, perennial bunchgrass native to North America. It is highly adaptable and commonly found in prairies, open fields, and along roadisedes.

General Description:

Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) is a warm-season, perennial bunchgrass native to North America. It is highly adaptable and commonly found in prairies, open fields, and along roadisedes. Switchgrass gross in tall, clumps with narrow, green to bluish leaves that may turn yellow or reddish in fall. The roots penetrate deep (up to 10 feet) improving drought tolerance.

Uses:

Panicum vigatum can be used for forage for livestock though it does become corse with maturity. It is a great option for erosion control and provides wildlife cover and food for birds, deer and pollinatiors.

Planting Conditions:

Switchgrass tolerates a wide range of soils, from sandy to clay but does best in well-drained conditions. It thrives in full sun, can tolerate light shade. It prefers a pH range of 5.0-7.5 but can tolerate slightly more acidic or alkaline soils. Thrives in warm conditions and grows actively in summer. Best time to plant is spring (when soil temps have reached 50-60 degrees) or late fall for a dormant seeding.

Establishment:

Switchgrass can be slow to establish but proper site preparation, planting and management will ensure long term success. Before planting makes sure you control the existing weeds. Idealy you don’t want the grass to have competition as it gets established. If soil is disturbed make sure soil is firm that when you step on the soil your footpring doesn’t sink deeper than 1/2″. Don’t plant seeds deeper than 1/2″ as seeds are small and will struggle to emerge. Seeds can take 2-3 weeks to germinate but full establishment may take as long as 2 years. The growth is slow the first year as the plant develops its roots first.

Avoid grazing or cutting in the first year to allow strong root development. When plants reach between 18-24 inches tall light grazing is tolerated.
