General Description:
Yellow Beeplant (Cleome lutea) is a native annual or biennial herbaceous plant found in the western United States, commonly found in arid and semi-arid regions. Yellow Beeplant is known for its beauty, and adaptability to harsh conditions.
Cleome lutea typically grows 1-3 feet tall with an erect, slender, and branching, with a slightly sticky texture stem. The leaves palmately compound with 3-5 leaflets, green to bluish-green and often with a slightly hairy surface. The flowers as its name area. bright yellow, clustered in racemes at the top of the stems. Each flower has four petals and long protruding stamens, giving a spider-like appearance. Seeds are elongated, cylindrical pods that contain small, round seeds, which are dispersed by wind or animals.
Uses:
Cleome lutea is a great pollinator attractor. It is often used for ethnobotanical purposes, revegetation, and ornamental.
Planting Conditions:
Yellow Beeplant is commonly found in sandy, well-drained soils often in disturbed areas, grasslands, deserts and sagebrush-steppe ecosystems. It can be found at elevations ranging from 2,000 to 8,000 feet. This flower thrives in full sun. It is extremely drought tolerant once it is established. This beeplant needs at least 6″ of annual precipitation to survive. It thrives best in areas where most moisture comes during the spring and early summer seasons.
Establishment:
When wanting to establish yellow beeplant choose areas with soils that are well-drained sandy, rocky or loamy soils. It struggles in heavy clay soils. Remove any competing vegetation and weeds which can outcompete the young seedlings. Lightly roughen the soil surface to create better seed-to-soil contact. Avoid compacted soils. Yellow Beeplant has a hard seed coat that requires some type of scarification for best results. This scarification can be accomplished by lightly scratching the surface with sandpaper or soaking in warm water (not boiling) for 12-24 hours to improve germination. Another great way is planting in the late fall (dormant seeding) right before the snow flies. By doing this the snow will fall on top of the seeds providing a natural scarification for the outer hard shell of the seed.
Yellow Beeplant can be planting either in late fall (when night temperatures are freezing and day temperatures are around 50 degrees) or early spring. When planting in early spring ensure seeds experience cooler, moist conditions to break dormancy. This plant germinates best with cooler soil temperatures and sufficient early moisture.
Once established yellow beeplant readily self-seeds, allow plants to mature and drop seeds for future growth.
Seeding Rate:
Broadcast seeding rate 8-10 pounds per acre.
Don’t plant deeper than 1/8 to 1/4 inch deep.
Watering:
In arid areas, apply light irrigation after planting to ensure consistent moisture until seedlings establish. Avoid overwatering, as yellow beeplant prefers dry conditions once established.
