Product Description

General Description:

Green Sprangletop (Leptochloa dubia) is a native, warm-season bunchgrass that is commonly found throughout the southern and lower midwest states along with Califonia and a few eastern states. The leaves of the plant are not abundant, but are generally tall, wide, and generally flat. Leaf sheaths are sometimes longer than the internodes, flattened, and often purplish. The seedhead spreads wide and typically droops in a “nodding” fashion.

Uses:

Green Sprangletop is palatable for many classes of livestock and wildlife, especially while the growth is young and green. Sprangletop thrives in the heat of the summer but is able to hold good forage quality during the cooler seasons. Often, Green Sprangletop is used as a component of seed mixtures due to its non-dominant nature. Although it does not spread far, it is successful at re-seeding itself.

With a fast establishing root system, Green Sprangletop is a good quality, fast establishing grass that can also offer protection, early in the spring, to other non-competitive seed varieties. Green Sprangletop is great for revegetation, mine improvement, and critical area plantings.

Planting Conditions:

Although often found in the Southern desert, Green Sprangletop prefers to grow in areas with rocky, gravelly, and loose soil types. It is important with this variety that weed problems are reduced prior to planting Green Sprangletop. Nitrogen should not be applied prior to or during the first year of growth to deter weed growth during the establishment phase. Weeds may be controlled through mowing or use of herbicides.

Establishment:

Green Sprangletop prefers soils that are weed free and compacted firmly. The seed should not be planted deeper than 1/4″-1/2.” Green Sprangletop should be planted during the heat of the late spring or the summer.

Seeding Rate:

With a seed count of 538,000 seeds per pound, Green Sprangletop should be planted at approximately 5- 8 pounds per acre for a full seeding rate.
