General Description:

Our Lawn and Turf mix is your premium, dark green, soft, thin bladed turf. It is designed to grow in two stages: The Perennial Ryegrass will germinate and show in 7-10 days. It will bind the soil/seed bed and hold moisture for the slower germinating Kentucky Bluegrass, which will germinate and show in 21 days.

The Kentucky Bluegrass is a cool season grass known for its lush, dense turf carpet look. It has a spreading root system known as rhizomes. This type of root system helps fill in bare spots. Bluegrass does prefer full sun but can tolerate some shade. For best results plant in areas that receive plenty of sun.

The Perennial Ryegrass is a cool season grass know for its quick germination and establishment. It has a fine to medium texture with a bright green color. This variety grows best in full sun but can survive in partial shade. The Perennial ryegrass is not as long lived as the Kentucky Bluegrass so over time the Kentucky Bluegrass will take over.

Uses:

Commonly used for lawns, and landscapes.

Planting Conditions:

This mix grows in a variety of soil types but does prefer well-drained, loamy soils with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0. Drainage is crucial to prevent water logging. These varieties grow best in full sun but can survive in partial shade. For best results plant in full sun areas. After planting, seed bed should be kept wet at all times during germination and establishment. Try to avoid letting the soil dry out.

When preparing the soil remove any debris, weeds and rocks from planting area. Loosen the surface of the soil to create a welcoming seedbed. This creates good seed-to soil contact which is needed for good germination. Incorporate organic matter if soil health is lacking this will help improve soil structure and fertility.

When planting broadcast the seed evenly over the prepared soil and if possible roll over the seeds to press the seeds into the soil to improve contact with soil even further.

Planting Time:

Best time to plant is early fall, but can be planted early spring or late summer. By planting in the fall it allows the grass to establish before winter. Planting early spring does take advantage of the warmer weather for faster growth.

Seeding Rate:

Seeding rate is about 5lb. per 1000 sqft or 250lb. per acre.

Watering:

While the seed is germinating and getting establish keep soil damp and avoid letting soil dry out for best results. After seed is established, water deeply but less frequently to encourage deep root growth.

Long Term Care:

Once grass is established you can apply fertilizer if desired, make sure to read the label to know the recommended application rate for the varieties that were planted.

Begin mowing once the grass reaches about 3″ tall. Avoid cutting more than 1/3 of the grass height at a time.

Mix ratios:

  • 70% Kentucky Bluegrass
  • 30% Perennial Ryegrass
