Tall Fescue is a beneficial cool-season forage grass for pasture widely used for hay, turf, and erosion control. It is adaptable to many soil and moisture types but does best on medium to clay texture soil with adequate moisture. It is comparatively deep rooted. It grazes closely and is long-lived. This grass is a good producer with fair palatability, and is good for fall and winter pasture. Great Basin Seed sells endophyte free varieties.

Tall Fescue will grow fairly well on soils low in fertility, but it is better adapted to fertile conditions. It will produce top growth when soils are as cold as 40 F, and it continues growth into late fall in the south.

Tall fescue is easy to establish due to its rapid germination and good seedling vigor. It may be planted by any common method such as grass seeders, hydroseeding, and broadcasting. The areas of tall fescue adaptation include all areas east of the Great Plains, except southern and central Florida. Other areas of adaptation include the Pacific and Intermountain Northwest and extreme southern Alaska.

Our best selling forage tall fescue is called ‘Rustler’. It was first developed for high dry matter yields and for improving resistance to diseases that commonly affect tall fescue. Rustler is tolerant to various climatic challenges. It can withstand cold, drought, and heat stress. Rustler is adapted to soil challenges including poor drainage, and a wide range of pH levels. It has large, soft leaves with a sturdy crown. It is a good producer with fair palatability, and is good for fall and winter pasture. This Tall Fescue is suitable for: dairy and beef cattle, horses, sheep and goats, pasture, hay, and silage.

Rustler is tolerant to many climatic challenges such as cold, drought, and heat stress. It’s also tolerant of many soil challenges including poor drainage, and a wide range of pH levels. Rustler’s large, soft leaves and sturdy crown provide highly palatable plants that are resistant to over-grazing. This fescue often yields over 6 tons of dry matter per acre under well-managed regimens.
